The Harp in Irish Culture: History, Performers and Imagery - Helen Lawlor

As part of Aistear 2030, a programme of events promoting the Comhaltas Prospectus up to 2030, Clasac is hosting a series of lectures.

In this lecture Dr Helen Lawlor will discuss the Irish harp through different historical eras. The harp was the foremost instrument of early Gaelic Ireland and its Gaelic legacy still remains important today. The harp has been used as the symbol of Ireland for centuries and its music carries a rich tradition and heritage. Thanks to the 18th century collector, Edward Bunting we know much of the ancient Gaelic harp. Poets, writers and painters have adopted the harp as a metaphor for Ireland in many artistic works. Dr Lawlor will explore the changing history and music of the harp, discussing how this ancient tradition has been transformed and pioneered in the past 100 years by creative performers. She will share some of the harp's beautiful repertoire through performances during the lecture.

Dr Helen Lawlor lectures in music at the TU Dublin Conservatoire.

Session and refreshments to follow.
